CLUB HISTORY

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mt Gravatt, the Rotary Club of Carindale was formed through the hard work of Owen West, supported by Mel Langley and Max Cribb. Interest meetings commenced in March 2000 and the Club was chartered on 31st May 2000 with 22 members.

The Club was selected as a ‘Model’ Club to participate in a project initiated by Rotary International to ensure that Rotary remains relevant in the 21st century. The Club has developed its own constitution and bylaws, not necessarily compliant with the Rotary Constitution, but that still embrace the ideals of Rotary and in particular, the Four-Way Test.

Early annual projects included the Brisbane BillyCart Championships (2005-2023) and in conjunction with the Port of Brisbane and Balmoral Rotary Clubs, The Brisbane Kite Festival, first held in 2010.

The Club had previously supported the Port of Brisbane Rotary Club to run the Wakerley Carols community event and in December 2021, took over sole responsibility for this popular event.

In early years the Club supplied a motor vehicle to MND & Me, an inflatable rescue boat (IRB) with outboard motor and tilting trailer to the SES, a four seat golf buggy to PresCare Vela to transport residents around the facility, a shed to PCYC Carindale for youth activities and the installation of distance markers along Carindale Reserve walking tracks. Read our Beneficiaries Register for our community support since.

In 2017, 2018 & 2019 the Club was Platinum Sponsor for the Gallipoli Medical Research (GMR) annual fundraiser - 'The Red Run for Remembrance'. When this could no longer be held due to pandemic restrictions, working with GMR, the Club became the Presenting Partner for the Virtual Run for Remembrance, raising almost $16,000. The Club also initiated and co-sponsored with George Hartnett Funerals, a ‘Men’s Cancer Wellness’ program. This was piloted at the Cyril Gilbert Cancer Centre, Greenslopes Private Hospital, through GMR. Aspects of this program have now been incorporated into their Cancer Wellness Program.

The Club’s activities are not confined to the local community. A club member took leave from his dental practice twice to volunteer on the Mercy Ships program in Africa. He also volunteered with a group to build school dental clinics in Tonga. Other members regularly volunteer in Thailand, to assist with renovations of an orphanage. The Club sponsored three participants to attend the Alliance for Hope international Conference in San Diego to enable them to experience family justice centres, camps for children who had experienced domestic violence and to converse with researchers and therapists related to DV issues. This information led to developing programs with Beyond DV, a local organisation and the establishment of the Hope Hub at Westfield Carindale.

The club's activities encompasses events; financial grants; working bees; road clean-ups; Bunnings and community BBQ’s; packing and loading containers to be shipped overseas through the Rotary Australia Repurposing Equipment (RARE) facility; supporting volunteers to build the Watson Street Community Garden, Camp Hill; Youth programs; financial grants; members provision of food hampers and gift cards to families in need at Christmas.
